{"id":1923,"date":"2019-04-26T12:58:59","date_gmt":"2019-04-26T12:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/?p=1923"},"modified":"2019-04-26T12:58:59","modified_gmt":"2019-04-26T12:58:59","slug":"faults-in-rose-hill-quarry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/faults-in-rose-hill-quarry\/","title":{"rendered":"Faults in Rose Hill Quarry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Conservation work by the Lickey Geo-Champions continues to unearth evidence for the structural evolution of the Lickey Quartzite.\u00a0 However, one particular pair of structures\u00a0 has proven to be highly elusive.\u00a0 In <em>The Geology of the Lickey Hills<\/em>, William Boulton, who succeeded Charles Lapworth as Professor of Geology at Birmingham University, made the following observation, \u201cOther evidence of overthrusts in the Quartzite can be seen near the base of the large quarry on the north side of Rednal Gorge and about 900 yards south of Eachway Lane.\u00a0 Two adjacent thrusts converging eastwards are here exposed, the upper inclined to the west at 18<sup>o<\/sup> and the lower at 25<sup>o<\/sup>.\u00a0 Eastward they end rather abruptly against a vertical shatter belt in the quartzite.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1925\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rose-Hill-Thrusts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1925\" class=\"wp-image-1925\" src=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rose-Hill-Thrusts-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rose-Hill-Thrusts-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rose-Hill-Thrusts-768x397.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rose-Hill-Thrusts-1024x529.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rose-Hill-Thrusts.jpg 1206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boulton&#8217;s Sketch of the thrusts in Rose Hill Quarry<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Previous clearance sessions have concentrated on the main Rose Hill quarry, but while processing a LIDAR image of the area Alan Richardson identified two subsidiary excavations.\u00a0 His preliminary reconnaissance of the eastern one in February identified a movement plane, with what appeared to be drag folding, apparently consistent with the upper of Boulton\u2019s two thrusts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1927\" style=\"width: 613px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-2-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1927\" class=\"wp-image-1927 \" src=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-2-web-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-2-web-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-2-web-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-2-web-1024x577.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1927\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig 2. The new viewing platform, from which the fault plane rises away from the viewer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The results were somewhat mixed in terms of providing the anticipated structural evidence.\u00a0 With the vegetation and debris removed, the movement plane turned out to be significantly steeper than the 18<sup>o<\/sup> recorded by Boulton.\u00a0 With respect to the drag folding, it had been hoped that more definitive evidence would be found in the form of a deformed clay layer \u2013 however, the new excavations did not unearth any such structure.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1930\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-5-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1930\" class=\"wp-image-1930 \" src=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-5-web-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-5-web-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-5-web-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-5-web-1024x765.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig 5. The lower yellow line identifies the position of a second fault plane, shown in close-up in Fig 6.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The excavation revealed a second fault plane at a lower level.\u00a0 It is characterised by a fault breccia, consisting of fragments of Lickey Quartzite in a matrix of soft clay.\u00a0 It proved impossible to expose more of this structure, owing to the proximity of a substantial root, the removal of which would have destabilised the Scots Pine to which it belonged.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1931\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-6-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1931\" class=\"wp-image-1931 \" src=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-6-web-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-6-web-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-6-web-768x577.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig-6-web-1024x769.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig 6.
