{"id":1936,"date":"2019-04-26T16:17:59","date_gmt":"2019-04-26T16:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/?p=1936"},"modified":"2019-06-04T09:28:58","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T09:28:58","slug":"fossil-find-in-the-lickey-hills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/fossil-find-in-the-lickey-hills\/","title":{"rendered":"Fossil Find in the Lickey Hills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Lower Ordovician Lickey Quartzite is well-known for its lack of fossils.\u00a0 It is interpreted as a near-shore sand flat facies: as such it would have suffered bioturbation, wave agitation and twice-daily scouring by tidal currents.\u00a0 These processes, combined with predation and scavenging would quickly remove any potential fossils.\u00a0 It is worth remembering that, &#8216;absence of evidence is not evidence of absence&#8217;, and in many cases biologically active environments frequently have a very low potential for preserving fossil remains.\u00a0 However, it would be mere speculation to suggest that the environment in which the sands of the Lickey Quartzite were deposited supported any kind of biota without some tangible evidence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On a recent Geo-Champions &#8216;research walk&#8217; Alan Richardson identified a single bedding plane that preserves the paired burrow openings of Diplocraterion.\u00a0 While no cross-sections of the U-shaped burrows have been observed, the more or less consistent spacing of the pairs of openings supports this interpretation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Julie Schroder and Alan Richardson returned to the site in April to clean up the exposure and provide a clear path of access.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1938\" style=\"width: 637px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diplocraterion-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1938\" class=\"wp-image-1938 \" src=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diplocraterion-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diplocraterion-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diplocraterion-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ehtchampions.org.uk\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diplocraterion-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig 1.
