Visitors to Loxter from Cambridge
Forty three members of the Friends of Sedgwick Museum included Loxter Ashbed Quarry in their three day field excursion from Cambridge at the start of October. Although the weather had not been kind for much of the day, the rain stopped when they reached the quarry so they were able to inspect the quarry at a relaxed pace.
The group were suitable impressed by the state of the site, commenting on being able to see the geology without having to do any gardening. There were discussions on the quality of the limestone, possible origins of the quarry as well as the structural features. The origins of the nodules were discussed but the theory that they nucleated round fossil remains had to remain unproven.
The recent rain on the faces of the boulders made for good fossil spotting conditions and two more trilobites were found: many of the group had not seen trilobites in the field and were pleased at the chance to examine real specimens.
