Upton Cubs visit Loxter Ashbed Quarry
Upton Cubs visited the quarry following a week of wet, rainy weather but we were lucky that the day itself was dry. We met up in the Farmers Arms car park (our thanks to Hannah and team). This gave the cubs a chance to re-engineer the puddles in the car park and build an island in one of them.
On the walk to the quarry we checked the colour of the rocks, seeing how we moved from red to yellow and back again. At the quarry Andy explained how the rocks were laid down an awfully long time ago – way before the dinosaurs and that any fossils were likely to be small. He showed them how to use a hand lens and the cubs then investigated the rocks on the quarry floor.
The cubs found some Branchiopods but the find of the evening was part of a trilobite. This prize, and several smaller finds, were carried back to the car park.
